ETI's CEM_CN Series Capacitor Duty Contactors
The CEM_CN series is specifically designed for capacitor switching in power factor correction applications, utilizing the AC-6b utilization category. These contactors are built with pre-charge resistors and an early-make contact block to limit inrush current.
Operating Principle:
When a capacitor bank is switched on, the capacitors are initially uncharged, which causes them to act as a short circuit for a very short period. This leads to a high inrush current that can reach up to 100 times the rated current, significantly reducing the lifespan of the capacitor. The CEM_CN contactor is designed with damping resistors which limit this high inrush current. The early-make contact block is activated before the main contacts to limit the inrush current. The damping resistors are then switched off after 5 milliseconds, leaving only the capacitors in parallel with the inductive load.
