Capacitor duty contactors CEM CK..N are specifically designed for switching capacitor banks in automatic reactive power compensation systems. They operate according to the AC-6b category of use, which is suitable for switching capacitive loads.
A key feature of most models (CEM 10CK to CEM 70CK) is the inclusion of integrated auxiliary contacts (early make) with precharge resistors. When switching a capacitor ON, these auxiliary contacts close first, which limits the inrush current by forcing it through the precharge resistors. The main contacts close a few milliseconds later. This process significantly reduces the inrush current, contributing to a longer lifespan for the equipment.
The models CEM 2,5CK, CEM 5CK, and CEM 7,5CK are exceptions; they do not have integrated auxiliary contacts or precharge resistors due to the smaller capacitor powers they are designed for.
When selecting a contactor, it is important to choose one based on the power capacity of the capacitors. For group and centralized reactive power compensation systems without detuning reactors, it is recommended to use over-sized contactors (Contactor nominal power > capacitor rated power) for a longer lifespan experience.
